Magnus Hawker-French

Magnus started playing trombone at the age of 9. His love of Jazz developed when he moved to secondary school and joined the school Jazz Band. Lessons with the school’s trombone teacher and Jazz specialist, Noah Noutch, have given him the tools and inspiration to explore a range of Jazz styles and develop his improvisation. An active member of the Nottingham Youth Jazz Orchestra, Magnus has performed at venues across Nottingham and in 2019 at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Over the past year he has enjoyed playing in Jazz Jam sessions at Peggy’s Skylight, Nottingham, at Pizza Express Live, Holborn and various venues on the Isle of Wight. Eighteen months ago he successfully auditioned for the Junior Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Jazz Course where he studies on Saturdays. In 2019 he was awarded the title Nottingham Young Brass Player of the Year following a public performance of a full Jazz Programme and earlier this year won the Carlton Male Voice Choir’s Music Makers Award. As well as improvising on trombone Magnus also enjoys playing Jazz on the piano and the viola.
