A fabulous eight piece band created specifically for Christine's latest project and CD PELT. Now based in New York Dublin-born vocalist and composer Christine Tobin has been at the heart the UK jazz scene for the best part of 30 years and has appeared in Derby many times. In PELT she lends her “24 carat voice” (The Guardian) and her award winning composing skills to the words of contemporary Pulitzer-winning poet Paul Muldoon in a night of music that is teeming with “timbral richness and breath taking imaginative scope” (Jazzwise).
Renowned for her unique rich voice and original compositional style Christine Tobin has led various projects and in 2012 ‘Sailing to Byzantium’, her settings of WB Yeats poems, won a British Composer Award. The award included a PRSF commission to write new music, which Christine has developed into PELT. Christine had long admired Paul Muldoon’s work and he was greatly impressed by her settings of WB Yeats. When they discussed setting his poems, Paul gave Christine a copy of his collection ‘Paul Muldoon Poems 1968 – 1998’ and carte blanche to choose the poems she wished to work with. He also sent her new lyrics and as the project unfolded, the texts chosen ended up a being mix of poems and lyrics.
